Everyone’s nutritional needs are as unique as their health journey. So let me share with you my personal journey to becoming a Certified 21-Day Sugar Detox Coach and why this program is so important to me.


Like many women, I spent my teenage years and twenties in a battle with self image, body weight insecurities, skin issues and a terrible relationship with food and intense workout regimes. After having two kids, I could no longer adhere to any of the rigorous programs I’d followed in the past. Before children, I was unable to find anything that was truly sustainable and now as a mom my energy tank was empty.

I remember thinking I just needed to get my willpower back, then I could do all the things I wanted. I needed motivation and let me tell you the internet has endless options of “super moms” with their “super bods” and “super slimming shakes”. I thought if I could just find the right one I’d be on my way. I will forever be grateful that none seemed to give me what I was looking for. I just wanted to feel healthy and happy.


Then I listened to The Balanced Bites Podcast by Diane Sanfilippo and Liz Wolf. In listening to the show, I found out I wasn’t alone in my feeling of needing a magic pill to get my willpower back. They had so many “callers” with similar stories and their answer was always the same:

EAT REAL FOOD!

They explained that our bodies are made to crave sugar and that modern food choices are saturated with sugar. Too much sugar can leave us feeling tired, weak, with acne, craving more food, increased mood swings, PMS, making us susceptible to colds and leaves us getting unrestful sleep.

ALL THE THINGS I WAS STRUGGLING WITH!!!

What was scary was finding out if not addressed the potential side effects are much more severe : Adrenal fatigue, Alzheimer’s disease, anemia, cycsitc acne, eczema, depression, insomnia, diabetes, infertility, and substance abuse.


I slowly made changes from my “healthy standard American diet” – you know lots of whole grains and low fat everything- to a Paleo approach. Replacing toast at breakfast with a side of veggies and larger portions of protein and fat, substituting pasta with healthier carbs- squash, broccoli, and zucchini. It seemed so obvious, of course I was going to feel better eating more vegetables. But what about all this meat and fat?! Was the fat going to clog my arteries and not digest well in my stomach? After reading Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo and Eat the Yolks by Liz Wolf, the years of believing in the myths of the Standard American Diet were a thing of my past. Whole grains and low fat was out- I was no longer afraid of eating meat and healthy fats. I was ready to commit myself to the paleo way of eating.


I felt great and was eating some pretty delicious food. My whole family got on board. Let’s face it I did all the shopping and cooking, so they were in even if they didn’t know it. In 2017, my husband and I did our first 21-Day Sugar Detox. I learned so much the first time through the program. My husband and I have to build our plates differently with carbs, fats, and proteins, but no one needs whole grain bread, wheat pasta or brown rice anymore. I learned how sugar had been effecting my body in a negative way. In the past two years, we have adjusted what we eat and over and over again we come back to the fact that we need to cut sugar out! I personally have completed the detox several times, but the reality for me is that most of my meals fit into the program anyways. It is where I feel my best. I have energy to keep up with my kids and even train for volleyball again.


I wanted to keep learning so I enrolled in the Balanced Bites Master Class. I came out knowing I wanted to share this knowledge with others and became a Certified 21-Day Sugar Detox Coach. I am happy to say I don’t struggle with food anymore. I have come to love great quality and nourishing food and I use it to nourish myself, my husband and my kids. I continue to further my education in nutrition everyday. I’d love to help you find the freedom from sugar that The 21-Day Sugar Detox has brought me.
